Philosophy

At the core of my decision to become a teacher is the belief that education shapes confidence, identity, and opportunity. Art played a transformative role in my own growth. Early in my artistic journey, I often doubted myself and compared my work to others, but I learned that growth comes from practice, persistence, and learning from mistakes. While “practice makes perfect” may not promise perfection, it always creates improvement. These experiences inspire me to help students recognize their growth, value their effort, and see their creative potential.

I believe every student enters the art classroom with natural creativity. My role is not to give creativity, but to nurture and refine the skills and confidence that students already have. Art education extends beyond technical skill, it allows for cultural awareness, the use of critical thinking, and allows for personal expression. Art is a universal language, allowing students to communicate ideas and emotions that may be difficult to express verbally.

Central to my teaching is emphasizing process over product. Learning happens through experimentation, revision, and reflection. Mistakes are made to be opportunities for growth, and assessments focus on effort, progress, and thoughtful reflection rather than perfection. This approach helps create a growth mindset, resilience, and meaningful self-reflection.

Inclusivity is another core value. Every student brings unique experiences, cultures, and perspectives, and it is my responsibility to ensure all feel seen, respected, and supported. I intentionally incorporate diverse artists and cultural traditions, and I learn about students’ identities through surveys, sketchbook prompts, and conversations. This understanding allows me to design culturally responsive lessons that guide inclusion into belonging.

Flexibility and differentiation are key. Students have diverse abilities, learning styles, and linguistic backgrounds, so I provide multiple entry points into projects, adaptive materials, and a combination of guided instruction with opportunities for deeper exploration. Visual modeling, hands-on learning, and bilingual supports ensure all students can fully participate.

Art education also nurtures social and emotional growth. My classroom is a safe, welcoming space for expression, reflection, and constructive peer critique. Clear expectations for behavior, collaboration, and communication, paired with modeling empathy and patience, create a trusting community.

Art is inherently interdisciplinary, connecting creativity to history, science, literature, and mathematics. Exploring these connections makes learning relevant while affirming student identities through diverse representation. Equity and inclusion guide every lesson, providing multiple pathways for all students to meet high expectations and feel capable, challenged, and valued.

Guided by Universal Design for Learning (UDL), I design instruction that provides multiple ways for students to engage, access content, and express their ideas. This approach helps students build artistic skills while fostering independence, agency, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives. I view myself as a facilitator, advocate, and lifelong learner, supporting students as they grow. Through this work, they leave the classroom not only with artistic abilities, but also with confidence, empathy, and the belief that their voices matter.
